He's Still Creating

"...even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist." - Rom 4:17 (NASB)

Typically speaking, when we think about creation, our minds immediately go to Genesis. There we read how the LORD spoke and the universe as we know it came into being. After six days God rested or ceased. But is this the end? Is it possible that He is still creating, even as you read this?

The verse above is speaking about Abraham and his faith. As he writes to the Roman believers Paul is presenting the concept that we are made right in God's sight by faith. (You'll have to read the entire chapter to get the context.) While he is doing so, he briefly touches on a powerful principle that we do not often think about. He writes that God calls into being that which does not exist. That's creating! Not reallocating what He has already created, but bringing not existence.

So what is God is bringing into existence?  Well, let me remind you what's recorded in the Bible: God created a bumper-crop of frogs, lice, and flies in Egypt to display His authority and identity, He created water from rocks, bread from the dew, and shoes that lasted 40+ years for His people. He made the sun stand still in the sky, and once even made it back up a bit. He created sight for some who were blind, health for some who were paralyzed, and even brought life back into bodies that had expired, and there are many more instances. Now, if these are not examples of a God who is still creating, then I don't know what is.

When we pray we often get a vision in our mind of God reallocating what He has already created. For example, when we pray for financial needs we might think of God releasing some overdue refund, an unexpected bonus in our direction, or maybe an inheritance from a wealthy family member.  When we pray for someone who is sick we often direct our prayers man-ward, asking God to enable the doctors and medications to bring relief or health from the ailment. When we look at our families that are falling apart we might ask God to restore what was lost. You get the point.  But, what if we are praying poorly? If God is still bringing into existence things that do not exist, then instead of praying for some unknown financial "redirection", what if we simply asked for a miracle? What if focused our faith in God and asked Him to heal our loved ones who are sick? What if rather than praying for restoration of relationships we ask God to create something new, something that was not there before, that is even better? There is no guarantee that God will answer our prayers precisely the was we would like. He might, but He may just do so in a way that surpasses our needs and desires.

The thought that God still creates should open up avenues to our faith that were not possible before, and should change the way we pray. Too many times we limit God in our prayer lives because, well, we are human. We can't see and understand the things that God does. The good is that we don't need to. All we need is faith in God. So, what does God need to create for you today? Are you facing some decision where none of the options will work? We serve a God who is able to open doors that you did not even know existed!
