It Begins With God

"In the beginning God....God created man..." - (Genesis 1:1, 27 ESV)

     In a world where gods are promoted everywhere, and new ones "created" by the hour, it is helpful to remember exactly where we are in the hierarchy of creation. God is the center, not man. The center of what, you ask? Everything! It is no coincidence that the first four words of Scripture is, "in the beginning God." Before anything and everything that we can know, God was present. He has neither beginning nor ending. These are impossible concepts for us to grasp, and yet neither our ability to understand nor our unwillingness to believe limit Him. And, it was this God, eternal in nature, that created man of His own design, not the other way around. We sometimes like to think that we are the superior being, but it is not even close. There is one God, and we are not Him. 

     As we enter a new year on the calendar, consider your own views of this God of the Bible. If He truly is the God described within its pages, then He must have incredible plans for you this year. A great way to kick off this year is determine that you will allow God to have His way on your life. Each hour, each day, and each week, living in such a manner that brings honor to God.

Dependent Upon God

Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp..." Exodus 14:1    Have you ever stopped and considered why God led the Israelites to freedom by taking them through the desert? Really, think about the process for a moment. He led them out of the slavery for a day or two, then told them to turn back towards the city of their captivity, next to the sea, and make camp. This lead to their being trapped. Then He led them to a place with with plenty of water, but it was undrinkable. Not too long after that, when all their food provisions were depleted, He led them to a place where there was no food or water for themselves or their livestock. Why would God be so cruel? Well, if you know the rest of the story, then you may already know the answer. They were never trapped, for God parted the waters, allowing them safe passage through the sea and drowning their enemies. The undrinkable water was made drinkable, and they were provided food

Biblical Apprenticeship

"...Go therefore and make disciples... ” - (Matt. 28:18-20)   The Greek word mathetai is the term we usually translate as disciple, and it expresses the idea of "student" or "pupil". To me, the best understanding today of the biblical principle of disciples is apprentices.
