Are They Blind?

"Jesus answered and said to him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.'" - John 3:3 (NASB)

If you read the entire record of Jesus conversation with Nicodemus, it should become evident that Nic has not earthly idea what Jesus is talking about. Jesus himself even responded to Nic's confusion, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things." (v.10) It is relatively easy for us to look back at this encounter and be shocked at his lack of understanding; however I want to defend Nic's response for a moment. Nic had a major hurdle to overcome, but it had nothing to do with his knowledge of Scripture or his intelligence. His difficulty was spiritual blindness. Yes, he was educated in the Scriptures, but could not "see" the LORD, even though He was standing in front of him.
The NASB uses the word "see" in referencing God's kingdom, and for good reason. Certainly, no one will enter into heaven without being born again, but an individual cannot "see" or comprehend the things of God without a new birth experience. Jesus spoke of the Spirit's work after his ascension as guiding believers into truth. (Jn. 16:13) Once a person has been born again, the Spirit of God resides in their life, enabling them to begin to comprehend the marvelous things of God. Biblical knowledge and intelligence are no substitute for the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who teaches us all things pertaining to the Word of God. Nicodemus was not ignorant, just blind.
Spiritual blindness is just a prominent today as it was in the time of Nicodemus. I believe that spiritual blindness is one of the most effective weapons at the disposal of evil. How do we overcome this blindness? By shining the light. When the light of the gospel is shone in our lives, and through our lives, the eyes of the blind are opened. Unfortunately, shining light does not guarantee that every sinner will eagerly run to Jesus. No, some will run for cover and hide. However, some will come simply to "see."
